Three car parks in Cheltenham to host new rapid electric vehicle charging hubs in 2024,
with industry leader The EV Network appointed to deliver and manage the facilities.
The initiative supports Cheltenham’s ambition to achieve net-zero emissions by 2030.

In a significant move towards sustainable transportation, Cheltenham is on track to unveil three state-of-the-art electric vehicle (EV) charging hubs by November 2024. This development, aimed at bolstering the town’s EV infrastructure, follows the Cheltenham Borough Council’s commitment to becoming a carbon-neutral borough by 2030.

The ambitious project will see the installation of a total of 26 rapid charging bays, strategically located in key car parks around the town. Each charging point, equipped with high-powered technology, will enable EV owners to achieve a full charge in just 20 to 40 minutes. This rapid service is crucial for encouraging more drivers to transition from internal combustion engines to electric vehicles.

The collaboration between Cheltenham Borough Council and The EV Network, a prominent provider of EV infrastructure solutions, signifies a substantial investment in the town’s green future. The EV Network will not only deliver the charging hubs but will also manage the sites, ensuring a reliable and efficient service for local users.

The initiative aligns with Cheltenham Borough Council’s declaration of a climate emergency in 2019, which highlighted the need for dedicated electric charging points as part of the town’s “Carbon Neutral Cheltenham” report. This report underlined the importance of facilitating the shift towards electric vehicles, an essential step in reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality.

Councillor Alisha Lewis, cabinet member for finance and assets, expressed her enthusiasm for the project: “Our partnership with The EV Network marks a milestone in our efforts to promote sustainable transport options in Cheltenham. While electric vehicles are only part of the solution, it’s important that we ensure people have convenient charging options in our car parks.”

She added, “By investing in high-powered charging infrastructure, we are not only easing the transition to electric vehicles but demonstrating our commitment to reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality. This initiative aligns with our vision for a cleaner, greener, and more environmentally friendly Cheltenham.”

The first three charging hubs will be situated at St James Street, Bath Terrace, and Church Piece car parks, with additional locations planned for 2025. The launch is strategically timed to coincide with the bustling festive shopping period, including the popular Cheltenham Christmas ice rink, ensuring that the community has access to convenient charging options during peak times.

Reza Shaybani, CEO and co-founder of The EV Network, expressed excitement about the partnership: “We are thrilled to be working with Cheltenham Borough Council to deliver high-powered charging infrastructure throughout the borough. This initiative will play a vital role in supporting the growing number of electric vehicle users in Cheltenham and will significantly contribute to the town’s sustainability goals.”

As the EV Network continues to roll out its projects across the UK, including one of Europe’s largest charging hubs at NEC Birmingham, Cheltenham is set to join the ranks of towns prioritising eco-friendly transport solutions.
